Yes, the Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler Pickup, is possibly one of India’s greatest ever automobile designs.

Being a keen design enthusiast and student (self-taught and not the scholarly kind), I must say I was stunned when I saw the Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler Pickup in flesh for the first time on the evening of 14th August 2026, when Mahindra showcased it at a dazzling event in Mumbai.

Is This India’s Best Automotive Design?
In my view this is one of “India’s Best Automotive Designs”.

This was on the eve of India’s 80th Independence Day, and my instantaneous reaction was – this is easily one of “India’s Best Automotive Designs Ever”. As an Indian it makes me proud, and as an auto enthusiast I am sure that if it had been unveiled at any international motor show, it would be hailed as a great design globally. One that could have easily come out of the stables of any of the world’s leading auto manufacturers.

Pratap Bose (Chief Design and Creative Officer Mahindra) and his team, have a created a truly splendid, and smart and striking looking pickup, which has been named the Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler for the Indian market.

Yes, the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup’s design is so good, that if you replaced the manufacturers badge with that of any other international car maker, it would not look out of place. As a matter of fact, if any American, German, Japanese, Italian, French, or Korean manufacturer, had shown this pickup as their design, I think it would possibly have got more acclaim and compliments. Simply because, the world still does not associate any Indian manufacturer with brilliant, original and impactful designs.

Its not easy balancing the proportions of a pickup. But on the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup, the length of the front, 4- door passenger compartment, and cargo bed, are almost the same and it’s this that gives it a beautifully poised stance.

The sole exception being the Tata Nano of course. It completely stunned and shocked the world when the late Ratan Tata unveiled it at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi on January 10, 2008. Despite being introduced as the world’s cheapest car, it was snazzy and smart, and for the next few days it made news all over our planet, with everyone talking about India successfully making the “World’s Most Affordable Car”. With the Nano, Ratan Tata also gave the world the term “Frugal Engineering” and established India on the international automotive stage, as an inventive maker of cars. It is altogether a different story that the Nano did not achieve the success it deserved. But more about that some other time.

Even the rear is smartly shaped and sculpted, and is not fat and bulky like the rear end of most pickups. As the bumper corners slope upwards and the edges of the tailgate are  also sloped, it reduces the flat or fat area, and its such design details that have contributed in making this an outstandingly good looking pickup.

I was there when the Tata Nano was shown, and I was also there recently when the Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler  Pickup was unveiled. And I would also like to add that back in 1983, I had the opportunity to see India’s first modern car, the Maruti Suzuki 800 (SS 80), a few months before it was launched in December 1983. And being a keen buff of “Indian Automotive History”, I have closely followed all automotive happenings in our country, especially since 1986, when I became one of India’s pioneering auto journalists.

These design sketches provided by Mahindra show the attention to detail and the effort to balance and blend both strength and style, which fortunately has been done exceedingly well.

And in my view, the two best indigenous automotive designs to come out of India so far – have to be the Tata Nano and now the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup. And when I say indigenous, I mean purely Indian car makers like Tata and Mahindra. The Indian design team of Maruti have also designed and created cars, but at the end of the day, they are still Maruti Suzuki.

The striking front end has good amount of muscle and flair, and several other nice design touches too.

So, what is so special about the design, and looks and styling, of the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s a mature and smart design the likes of which you would normally expect from one of the worlds leading car manufacturers. So, it’s clearly an international level design that I think will be globally accepted and appreciated. In fact, I think it will do a lot for Mahindra’s brand image internationally, especially if they prominently and smartly showcase it.

The big front grille that flows into the equally tall bumper, has been balanced by a cluster of tall vertical fog lights, placed below the slender horizontal headlights. And it all stitches together superbly, the hallmark of a well thought through design.

One of the most difficult things to get right in any automobile, particularly a pickup, are the proportions. And with the Scorpio Pickup, Mahindra has got them bang on. Look at the side profile and you can see that the length of the front, the 4-door passenger compartment, and also rear cargo bed, is almost the same with everything looking nicely harmonized. What is also striking is that the height of the bonnet, and top of the cargo bed, are also almost the same, resulting in a streamlined design. Again, something not so common in pickups.

Pickup’s by their very nature and body style, are all about strength, ruggedness and utility. To bring style into this is a challenge, and in my view, Mahindra have excelled here. Because the Scorpio Pickup has an impressive balance of strength and style, with the scales tipping slightly in favour of style, which is actually a great thing. Because strong pickups are in plenty, but stylish ones are a bit of a rarity.

I simply adore the flat bumper with the square cutouts as it reminds me of the bumpers I saw on the factory prepared Mercedes-Benz 280 E’s that took part in the 1977 London to Sydney Marathon Rally, which had passed through India.

Looking at the close resemblance between both bumpers, makes me wonder if Pratap Bose and his design team had this rally prepared Merc 280 E in mind when they were designing the bumper of the Scorpio Pickup. If not, then it really is a happy coincidence and like a friend of mine says, “Coincidence is when God chooses to be anonymous”.

Then there is the detailing and surface treatment. Fortunately, with the Scorpio Pickup, Mahindra have been far more restrained than they normally are, and have gone easy on the ornamentation, and cuts and wedges, and bulges and spurs. The body surface is largely smooth and even in the front, the combination of the flat and big grille flowing into a large bumper, is smartly balanced with slim horizontal headlights and a cluster of dual tall vertical fog lights, placed below. I particularly like the square cutouts in the bumper. Usually one uses cutouts like this to reduce mass and weight, but in this case, it also adds a stylistic touch.

What a nicely balanced and smart silhouette. Note the nattily styled cab spoiler that gives the cargo bed and entire rear, a more sloping and angular feel.

And what personally appeals to me even more, is the fact that the front bumper on the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup, resembles the bumper on the factory prepared Mercedes-Benz E 280 that won the 1977 London to Sydney Marathon, the first international motorsport event I witnessed, when it had an overnight halt in Bombay. Looking at the close resemblance makes me wonder if Pratap Bose and his design team, had this rally prepared E 280 in mind when they were designing the bumper of the Scorpio Pickup, or is it just a coincidence. Or maybe like one of my friends says, “Coincidence is when God chooses to be anonymous”.

There are also some other standout detailing elements, like the two exposed red coloured tow hooks peeping out from the bottom half of the bumper. Or the smartly shaped and sleek snorkel, which blends in so well into the A-pillar, that you know its an integral part of the design, and not conceived as an add-on as it tends to appear with several other pickups and SUVs. I also like the pickup cab spoiler that gives a more sloping and angular feel to the cargo bed.

This is the design sketch of the interior shared by Mahindra. As is to be expected these days, a massive center digital display dominates the dash. But I am happy to see some physical buttons and controls too. I hope Mahindra give priority to ergonomics and put user friendliness over fancy and flashy digital commands and controls.

All these elements along with the commanding stance, balanced proportions, smart styling and overall design, show that a lot of thought has gone into creating the Scorpio Lifestyler Pickup, which Mahindra have announced will be launched in India in April 2027, at a starting price below ₹19.79 lakh ex-showroom. But its really built for the world and Mahindra’s export markets like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and so on. And I think if Mahindra get the mechanicals and the way it drives and performs right, and of course its load carrying and pulling capacity meets international requirements, the Scorpio Pickup has the potential to be a big success in many parts of the world.

For the Indian market, Mahindra have given it the name “Lifestyler” to leave no doubt in anyone’s minds, that this is a “Lifestyle” vehicle.  However, the fact is that though the number of Indians who enjoy the “Outdoor Life” and “Exploration Drives” is growing, these consumers are still not sufficient enough for it to be a commercial success. And therefore, the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup will have to prove itself in international markets. And it has started off well, because on the design, and looks and styling front, I am totally confident that it will be looked on affectionately.

The only thing that is a bit flashy is the massive and loud grille with chrome adornments. But I guess as Indians, somewhere we have to be a bit overdressed and in your face, and appear like we are headed for that “Big Fat Indian Wedding”. And as we are dressed for the occasion – lets raise a toast to what I think is one of “India’s Best Automotive Designs Ever”.

As an Indian, who loves cars, and who unfortunately so far has not had much to proudly speak about “Indian Auto Design”, I am absolutely delighted that the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup is an Indian creation, which was designed at the Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) in Mumbai, and developed at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai. And I fervently hope and pray, it’s the sign of things to come, and now onwards we will see more “Great Indigenous Indian Auto Designs”. Jai Ho – Vijay Ho.
